Lipstick Jungle: The Official Tour Guide

Matte? Lustre? Semi-glossy? Satin? Aerospace science? Supercalafredulousexpealidocious??

Is that often what you read or hear when looking at the different types of lipsticks? Do you wish it was just gloss and lipstick? Well, I'm hear to break this down so you can walk in anywhere and say "I want ___ and I want it now"

Often times what separates lipstick other than brand or color, is the finish. What the lipstick looks like when applied and after it is worn for a length of time can often give a clear difference in what lipstick you want.

Ultra-shine, High Gloss, Lustre

These lipsticks are going to be the closest you can get to a lipgloss without it being a gloss texture. It gives the slip and shine you want, while not being sticky or too heavy. However, with these lipsticks, they normally are not very opaque (they are very see-through) so it is hard to get the color payoff. If you like just a wash of color over the lips witha nice fresh dew, then these are the lipsticks you should play with.

Frost

Frost lipstick allows you to get shine but without the gloss. Imagine they put glitter and lipstick together and then they milled the glitter so small that it just looked like a cream sparkle. That's what is going on here. There are lipsticks within this finish where the sparkles are larger so it provides more of a shine, and then there are looks like this that appears just as foil. What is cool about the color below is it could be a color lipstick with gold sparkles blended in giving it that rose gold color.

Satin, Semi-Matte

"Anna? What's your favorite type of lipstick?"
"Oh who me? Oh, satin"

Yes, that was a conversation between me and myself. The point being I love these types of lipsticks and I'll tell you why. Even though I'm a glamazon, I also touch my face a lot and talk more than I should. I talk so much that I need to write as well. So that being said, I am a low maintence lipstick wearer. Meaning I don't wanna spend 10 mins putting it on, nor do I want to know that I need to reapply it all the time. This finish allows you to get the color payoff but still staying creamy. My skin is dry so I need something that gives me a little bit of moisture. It has a longer wear than high-shine lipsticks because it does not slip, but it's not as drying as matte lipsticks and is often easy to remove. I like that I can apply this quickly and touch up quickly because it moves on my skin well.

Matte

Matte lipsticks are all the rage, and for a good reason. Not only do they have the longest wear but the color payoff is the best of its kind. Meaning what you see on the lipsticks is what you will get on your lips. They are very opaque. The ultimate benefits of these lipsticks are that you do not need to do much touchup and you get to play around with colors. The disadvantages are the amount of time that it takes to put it on perfectly and it can stain your lips when you remove it.

Ultra-Matte, Retro Matte

These are a breed of their own. Wonderful lipsticks but VERY dry. Like they skip across your lips when you put them on and you don't want to put too much pressure and break the lipstick. I suggest using a lip brush to get even color and presicion. I like these ones if I want the color to stay (it often stains the lips) and then put a gloss on top. It's nice and bright and then also shows off the shine.

Liquid Matte

These are a fairly new lipsticks to the lipstick market. I think they are brilliant because it can be easy to apply and then they dry down to a beautiful matte. They can be wiped away quickly before it dries and manipulated into the exact shape you want. These are seriously worth checking out.

Tell me which lipstick you pick and how this had helped you.

Until next time
