The Haley Buckner Movement

For those of you who are a part of the beauty industry or involved with instagram in ANY way, chances are, you have heard of Haley Buckner.

It might be because you are one of her many followers on instagram that is a fan of her work.

It might be because you have seen Jenna Jameson or Steven Tyler in the last couple of months.

OR it might be because you have seen one of Chris Browns most controversial tattoos. Controversial because he took one of her beautifully decorated face chart and had it tattooed on his neck. With no recognition of her art.

If you have seen any of these, you have seen traces of Haley.

I have had the great pleasure of not only speaking to, but getting to interview the AMAZINGLY TALENTED Haley Buckner. You can hear her determination and passion for this business yet spoken through such a cheerful and kind heart.

1. Haley! Thanks for joining this wonderful beauty blog and being open to share your story with us. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

H: I am 25, I grew up in a small town in Northern Nevada and I always dreamed of moving to LA to become a makeup artist. My mom is a photographer and she would give me black and white portraits of women and I would paint them using oil paints. That was when I first fell in love with art and enhancing the natural beauty of a face.

2. How did you get started in the makeup industry?

H: I started working for MAC as soon as I turned 18 which taught me a lot about makeup, skin and customer service.

3. What advice do you have for those just starting out?

H: I always tell aspiring muas to start at a makeup counter that has a ton of traffic. It helps build your knowledge of skin type and texture and thats where you can learn everything you need to know through trial and error. Placing yourself in a busy environment also teaches you how to improvise and be quick when its needed. And trust me.. its needed.

4. Who is your biggest inspiration?

H: There are quite a few. But I'll say Charlotte Tilbury. Mainly because she's been doing makeup so long and she's still inspiring and creating amazing work.

5. What has been your favorite project to work on?

H: Steven Tyler.. without a doubt. He is by far the most charming person on earth.

6. What are 3 things everyone needs in their makeup bag and why?

H: A dramatic mascara, a moisturizer and a red lipstick. If you don't have time for anything else and you put those three items on, you'll still look like a rock star.

7. What is your favorite makeup trend?

H: I'm a lover of art so it's hard to choose just one.. but if you see me on the streets I'm usually wearing a bronze contour, dewy skin, naked eye and raspberry colored lip. Its just classic and beautiful without being too overdone.

8. If you didn't do makeup, what would you do?

H: if I didn't do makeup I'd be a famous actress. I'm kinda crazy and dramatic so I think it would fit :)

9. What have been your biggest success's?

H: Honestly.. a lot of people say to me, "Im so proud of you" or "How can I get to where you are?" But I dont feel like I've made it yet. There are so many goals I have that I haven't reached yet and it wasn't until very recently that I've felt like I made a small ripple in the vast ocean of this industry. If I had to name one of my biggest moments, I'd say getting a call sheet for Oprah and seeing my name on it made me feel pretty important for a day :)

10. What have been your biggest challenges?

H: The biggest challenge I've had to face is sacrificing my stability.  I can't just drive down the street to spend time with my family if I'm having a bad day. I can honestly say I've sacrificed just about everything in my life to get to where I want to be because I believe with every ounce in me that I will.

11. Haters.... Your thoughts?

H: If you're doing something good.. there will always be people who hate it. If they throw bricks, use those bricks to build yourself a fuckin empire.

12. What advice do you have for those trying to set their prices?

H: Know your worth. Find out what other people are charging in your area and don't undercut them. If someone doesn't want to pay your rate, you don't want them as a client. Truuuuust me.

13. You have quite the following on Instagram. Has that been helpful to your business?

H: Absolutely. Social media is the new age. It's the easiest and least expensive way to get your name out.

14. How did you get such a large following?

H: Chris Brown. Haha. Just kidding.. honestly I just know what people like to see. If you're a makeup artist and you post a photo of your soup.. people stop following you.

15. What makes you stand out from every other artist?

H: Do I? To be 100% honest, I'm tired of seeing the same thing on the same people. Concealer under the brow, drag style. I think if you don't have your own style or your own flare people get so bored of you.

16. What are your future plans/ dreams?

H: I'd like to work for celebrities and hopefully go tour the world. Until then I am going to keep busting my butt :) I believe everything happens for a reason and I'm just blessed to be able to do what I love.
