5 Common Mistakes in Makeup

Its such a tragedy when we see someone that has unfortunate makeup habits. It distracts from everything wonderful about them and makes you wonder what their home life is like. Maybe not that intense, but you get what I am saying. I think peoples intentions are good when they go to put their makeup on, well I hope, but sometimes it can get a little carried away.

These are in no particular order of significance but all are equally as important. Ladies, I am attempting to save you from yourselves!

1. Under Eye Concealer

Goal: When concealing under our eyes or any other blemishes on the face, we are told to go a little lighter than our actual skin tone to help brighten the discoloration.  I think the look we are TRYING to achieve is this one....

Problem: And when deeply misunderstood we get this....

Outcome: I find this very common in celebrity photos because they hire makeup artists that are probably "cheap" and just have no clue on what they are doing. Or they themselves, have no idea what they are doing. The tricky thing about this tactic is that it can look normal in the lighting we have, but when a photograph is taken with flash..... WHOLE OTHER STORY.

Solution: Figure out in which order you use your concealer. If you are a person that likes to conceal BEFORE you apply your foundation, then going for a color lighter than your skin is more do-able because you can blend it with your foundation. However, if you are a person that likes to apply your concealer AFTER your foundation, then go with something that is more your skin tone so it can blend naturally on top of your foundation.

2. Bronzing

Goal: Most of us desire to be tanner than we actually are. I don't know if its because all those exotic women are tan, mysterious, sexy, foreign or what it is, but its always nice to look sun kissed.

Problem: When we try and makeout with the sun instead of just be sun kissed.

Outcome: When we use bronzer to completely darken our entire face we end up like this. Now, let me say this, I have had my days where I want to take my bronzer and smash my face into it because I feel so pail, but you are going to take the attention away from being exotic and look more psychotic.

Solution: Pick a bronzer that doesn't have any shimmer or sparkles in it. It will give the illusion of a more natural tan and contour. If you want to add shimmer, you can always do so on top of the bronzer with a separate product, but start off with a matte color. Secondly, know your placements. You can refer to my older blog Celebrate Your Face Shape to find out where you should bronze/ contour your face depending on its shape. Thirdly, don't share your powder brush with your bronzing brush. Unless you plan on washing it in between each use, which then you are a weirdo with too much time and there is no excuse for these types of mistakes.

3. Blended Eyeshadow

Goal: Beautiful blended eyeshadow can make any color wearable. If put on incorrectly, well find a rock, and hide under it.

Problem: Color slapped on the eye with no consideration of others having to see it.

Outcome: I'm going to pretend that her eyeshadow is the only thing wrong with this picture, but for the sake of time lets just concentrate on the eyes. Now oddly enough, I have seen these two colors put together and look beautiful. But you should know if you are going to go with something as bold as this, you are going to need to take the time to learn how to put it on.

Solution: BRUSHES! I seriously cannot be a bigger fan of brushes and brush technology. Whether you decide to use more expensive brushes (that are probably higher quality and are going to last longer) or with brushes that are sold at your common drugstore, finding the correct brushes for your eyes is key. Just do me this favor, make sure that the hair on the brushes are real, not fake. You can find the cheaper brushes that are not synthetic, but you might have to spend the time to do so. I suggest Sonia Kashuk Brushes because she has a fantastic reputation with her brushes and they are more affordable than  department store brushes. Also, learning where to place your shadows will be a huge help. I will work on posting a blog or video that gives you practical tools to use to achieve beautifully blended shadows.

4. Full Mascara

Goal: Big Full Lashes

Problem: The mindset that "the more I put on, the better it will look". Try that with your weight! What I am trying to say is stop doing that.

Outcome: As you can see the lashes look spidery and clumpy. They do not flatter the eye at all and draw attention away from the face to just the lashes.

Solution: Find a mascara that is MEANT to be build-able. So many people take these mascaras that are meant to be a one or two swipe use and just keep swiping. Find a mascara wand that works best with your lashes and keep one on the side to help separate without actually adding any product.

BONUS!!! I wanted to add something extra in this section and quickly talk about fake eyelashes.

Goal: False Lashes
Problem: Overusing your false lashes

Outcome: Ok, obviously the first one is a joke, but I couldnt resist. Like wtf are those? But the second picture is some SCARY ASS LASHES. LIKE STRAIGHT UP FREAKY. Clearly she has reused her lashes too many times.

Solution: You can use your lashes more often if you do not put mascara on them.Without mascara expect 4-7 uses. If you put mascara over them then expect 3-5 uses. Make sure to pull the glue off of the lash line before using again.

5. Matte or Long-wear Lipstick

Goal: A matte lip that can stay all day.

Problem: When you do not reapply after eating or you do not moisturize before you put it on.

Outcome: Crackly, uneven lips.

Solution: Moisturize your lips at night so they are full and soft for the next day. Also, know that when you do bold colors, it is going to be a higher maintenance lipstick than say a gloss. So prepare to reapply and check in the mirror ever so often.

What do you guys think are the biggest makeup mistakes? Have you made any yourself? Let me hear your thoughts!

  1. For under-eyes, I do not think the darkness there on my is too bad or noticeable... I also don't think I need to eradicate it completely. I think a lot of people try to do that, to completely hide the circles. But it's natural to have a little shadow there and for a daily look, you don't have to over-apply! I use a foundation that I would say has 'buildable' coverage (either my Korean BB Cream, Bare Minerals, or both), and I just apply it a little heavier under the eyes to use as concealer (like maybe a 2nd layer after the first). I think you are a lot less likely to get the scary brightener "flash face" when you don't use a separate concealer!

Other tip: I don't have a lot of eye brushes, but my sister buys them. She has several from Target in various brands... and the great thing is that Target carries a few "natural" lines there with real hair or natural fibers in the bristles. I am always shocked by the price of brushes at Sephora so I am going to start looking at Target instead. I don't know if you have done one yet, Anna, but I would love to see a post about the common different shapes and sizes of eye brushes and what techniques each is best for (eg, I use the little angled one to apply shadow-as-liner, but which ones are for blending in the crease, which ones work best at applying a glittery shadow, are some better suited for loose or pressed shadows, which ones can be used wet?
